Sprig molded English Staffordshire stoneware hunting jug made circa 1800. This type of fine bodied stoneware jug was made in the period of circa 1790 - 1810 in the Staffordshire district by John Turner, Thomas and John Hollins, and others. As the jug has no mark, it can't be attributed to a particular potter, but is certainly of the 1790 - 1810 period.; This jug features a wonderfully detailed, continuous scene of hunters, horses and dogs. The stoneware body is set off with a chocolate brown glaze around the neck and on the spout and handle. The spout and handle are both beautifully modeled. The lower part of the body is engine turned, which was done on a lathe.; The jug is in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips. There is a bit of glaze rubbing to the spout rim, and one tiny black dot in the stoneware body just below the spout. The jug measures about 5" high and about 7 1/2" wide, including the spout and handle.
