Ludwig Bemelmans (New York/Austria, 1898-1962) 17" x 14", sight, watercolor with gouache titled, "The High World." Signed lower right, "Bemelmans." This watercolor is the illustration from the book, The High World . Bemelmans was born in Austria, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1914 at the age of 16. He was a very prolific artist. Although best known for his Madeline books, h e was also illustrator for The New Yorker , Vogue , and Holiday magazines. He won Newbery Honors for The Golden Basket in 1936, in which his best known character, Madeline, makes her debut. His book, Madeline won the Caldecott Honors, and the sequel, Madeline's Rescue won the Caldecott Medal in 1954. Matted and framed, 24 1/4 x 21 1/4". Condition slight foxing, else Fine.
