1879 Japanese Woodblock Political Record Rai Sanyo Kanshi Confucius China 12v
An interesting 18th century woodblock-print of ‘Japanese Government Records’ in typeset format written by Rai San’yo. Sanyo’s book first published in 1845 us a history of Japanese Sovereigns, from the mythical beginning to the Emperor Go Yozei. Written in Chinese, both works represent what is essentially a Confucian interpretation of Japanese history.
Rai San’yo頼 山陽 a Japanese Confucianist philosopher, historian, artist and poet of the later Edo period. His true name was Rai Noboru. Rai San’yō was born in Osaka and studied in Hiroshima and Edo before decamping to Kyoto in 1811, where he opened a school and devoted himself to the writing of kanshi poetry (verses composed in Chinese by Japanese authors). His most famous works are Nihon Gaishi (Unofficial History of Japan) and Nihon Seiki (Political Records of Japan).
This rare 12 volume 1879 edition of ‘Political Records of Japan’ is written in a column format with furigana usage for easier reading!
