Description
Thirty Japanese prints, as-is.Many of the prints appear to be from the 1880-1920 time period.Alot of the prints bear the label: The Dragon Co, 323 Grant avenue, San Francisco California, The Dragon's Smoked Color-Print.Some of the prints are by Hokusai(Totomi sanchu, In the Mountains of the Totomi Province) and Utamaro(face of a Geisha, title unknown).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I removed one unusual print from this group and it is being sold separately in this auction, lot 104.It appears to be a rare Hokusai print of a ghost.See lot 104 in this same auction.
Condition
Alot of these prints seem to have been exposed to moisture, they have small white spots which appear to be mold that was starting to grow.A handful are unaffected and appear to have strong color and no damage.Alot seem to have age darkening.I am not sure what the "Smoked Color Print"in the label refers to, it might have been an artificial means of ageing the prints, but for the sake of simplicity I am saying the really dark prints have probably been exposed to air or moisture or both.We will upload a photo of the label that appears on many of the prints when the photographer returns from vacation next Saturday, Jan 4th.
