Description
After George Earl (1824-1908, English), "A Field Trial Meet," 20th c., oil on canvas, presented in a wide cove molded frame, H.- 50 1/2 in., W.- 75 in.
Condition
Condition consistent with age. Some scattered hairs are seen adhered to the canvas, most noticeably in the lower left corner and along the right side. A ½ inch white mark is seen in the lower right corner. Paint varies in thickness throughout (canvas showing in the sky). No signature or inscriptions visible; 3 abrasions in proper right on one of the two gentlemen in the beginning of the scene. Evidence of in-painting in sky, a 1 1/8 in diameter gray patch – evidence of repair work done (possibly by the artist) on proper right side, upper corner, approximately 5 inches from edge of canvas. Gold leaf & gesso frame. An intriguing scene and handsome example.
