James Garfield Personally Owned Book, Report of The Commissioner Of Internal Revenue, 1865.
Report of the Commissioner of Internal Revenue on the Operations of the Internal Revenue System, for the Year ending June 30, 1865. Washington, Government Printing Office, 1865. Green quarter leather with brown pebble cloth. Raised spine bands and gilt titles. Inscribed on the front paste down as "J.A. Garfield, with compliments of Comm-Int-Revenue, April 21, 1866". The front paste down also has James A. Garfield's personal bookplate. The book has salmon-toned end papers which contain a lengthy introspective quote Â…"Woe to the country in which political hypocrisy first calls the people almighty, then teaches that the voice of the people is divine, then pretends to clamor for the true voice of the people, and lastly gets up the desired clamor Â…"
Lovely painted outer block in pastel tones with a marble effect. Internal pages overall clean with faint water lines. A fascinating account of all the sources of revenue from the country. Boards are rubbed and worn, however the binding remains tight and square. The front board has as small sticker with the President's name in type. 9.25" x 6" x 1.25". A wonderful copy.
