Description
Ca. 19th century lacquer manuscript box. Sadaik (large, rectangular wooden and gold gilt manuscript boxes) were used at monasteries and the homes of government officials and wealthy individuals. The box depicts Temple Guardians, protecting the contents of the box and a traditional Burmese motiff. The rectangular box houses a small box inside. The lid of which can be used to hold the lid of the larger box open. The exterior surfaces, lid and four sides are all decorated in the shwe zawa gold leaf technique. The draughtsmanship is both assured, delicate and of excellent quality. Given the nature of the Shwe Zawa style it is unusual for a box, such as this, to be found in such good condition.
