Description
1772 Scottish Holy BIBLE + Swiss Osterwald Protestant Commentary Glasgow Scotland
An important Osterwald Scottish Bible from 1772! This huge Bible comes from the French of Protestant Swiss pastor, Jean Frederic Osterwald who was notable for being highly influential among central European Protestants, so much so that he is often called the leader of a ‘second reformation’. He is remembered for his innovative dogmatics, exegeses, liturgies, and hymns, but his most important contribution was his translation of the Bible. His translation was extremely thorough and included aspects many different Bibles, seeking to make the most accurate form of scripture. According to Darlow and Moule,
“Osterwald made use of the original Hebrew and Greek, the Septuagint and the Vulgate, and the French hand German version- both Protestant and Roman Catholic. His alterations tend chiefly to modernize the language, but they sometimes also affect the sense.” (D&M 3814)
Note the spine of this Bible erroneously states 1765. While the general title page is lacking, the New Testament title page states Glasgow 1772. No 1765 Glasgow edition exists. We assume the 1765 date comes from the dates listed in the genealogy inside the front cover.
