Description
A carved wooden post with weathered surface and old inventory numbers painted on the bottom. The exact use of these posts is not clearly understood. It is believed that such object are used in initiatory and funerary contexts. The use of repeated or stacked truncated cone forms may be a visual metaphor for the multiplying of generations. In the context of initiation this would be particularly significant in that it would attach and ground the neophyte to a seemingly endless line of past initiates or imply that the he is in the presence of an entire lineage stretching back to the original ancestors. The post has been custom mounted to a metal base and measures 33 inches tall x 3.25 inches wide. Provenance: Ex Jacques Hautelet collection, La Joya, California.
