1840's Mexican - American War Era Batty Peace Flask
c. 1840's Mexican - American War Era, "Batty" Peace Flask, Copper, Very Fine.
This Mexican - American War Era Batty Peace Flask measures about 9.25" tall, 4" wide and 1.5" deep. Period replaced English top made by "SYKES PATENT". The name of 'Batty' is widely known in flask history since his "Peace" flask product enjoyed the longest run of manufacture of this type flask, covering 1847 to 1858. This fine condition 'Batty' flask exhibits the conventional tear-shaped copper body that bears a military motif design. One of the most attractive of all embossed flasks. An American Heraldic Eagle perches on arrows and olive branch above an oval of stars that surround a pair of clasped hands within a sunburst. Below is "U S" on a shield which overlays a trophy of arms, instruments, helmet, and banners. One carrying ring is missing, has an adjustable spout. Thumb piece and spring are in place and functional. Details are worn from years of actual use and handling, having a pleasing natural patina.
