Description
1747 Defoe Apparition of Mrs Veal Demonology Supernatural Ghosts
“It is never too late to be wise.”
― Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe
Charles Drelincourt was a 17th-century French protestant author who is best remembered for his book ‘Christians Defense Against the Fears of Death’. The English translation of this book became immensely popular much in part to Daniel Defoe’s promotion of the book. In fact, Defoe wrote his book ‘Apparition of Mrs Veal’ to help sell ‘Christians Defense’. These two works were published as one beginning in 1706, including this 1747 edition.
‘Apparition of Mrs. Veal’, a pamphlet story, is often described as the first modern ghost story (Stock) and is Defoe’s most famous work in which he discussed demonology. These books were immensely popular for well over a century, mostly because at this time the concept of apparitions was not necessarily considered to be supernatural.
