Description
1876 Sassanian Persia Seventh Great Oriental Monarchy Archaeology Illustrated MAP
George Rawlinson, Camden professor of Ancient History at Oxford and younger brother of the noted traveler and Assyriologist, Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson (the decipherer of cuneiform), documented the discoveries of his brother and other explorers in the field of Near Eastern archaeology.
"Rawlinson summarized for his generation in scholarly form the results of research and excavation in the East, in a series of works of considerable constructive ability which have hardly yet been superseded in English." [DNB]
One of these works was “The Seventh Great Oriental Monarchy,” which is a sequel to his ‘Parthians’ published in 1873. It is the history of western Asia from the third century to the middle of the seventh century focusing on the Sassanian Empire. Rawlinson discusses the geography, history, and antiquities of the Sassanian or last pre-Islamic Persian Empire and their defeat by the invading Arab peoples. Rawlinson discusses:
Condition of the Persians under the Successors of Alexander
Causes of Artaxerxes Insurrection
Size and Climate of Persia
Wars with Chosroes of Armenia
Wars with Rome
Works of Sapor
Civil War of Narses and his brother Hormisdas

Death of Constantine
Reign of Chosroes II and his wars
