Description
1890 Charles Spurgeon Ploughman Talk Pictures Proverb Baptist Puritan Devotional
“The loss of gold is great,
The loss of health is more,
But the loss of Christ is such a loss
As no man can restore.”
― C.H. Spurgeon, John Ploughman
Charles Spurgeon, a well-known Baptist Puritan preacher, provided collection of meditations on the meaning and clarification of proverbs, aphorisms, and illustrations in this book “John Ploughman’s Talk and Pictures”. Spurgeon wrote this book has a supplement to other works as a means to guide the reader in the conduct of life, pertaining to spiritual living.
A bit of Spurgeon’s whit, which is absent from most of his writings and sermons, is evident in this work – particularly in his chapter headings. For instance: “A Handsaw is a good thing, but not to shave with.” In this chapter, Spurgeon offers commentary on the use of tools, spiritual and otherwise, and using the gifts of individual people to be their best.
“One chap will make a clerk, another will do better to plough, and sow, and reap and mow…it’s no use forcing them; a snail will never run a race, nor a mouse drive a wagon.”
“Send a boy to the well against his will; the pitcher will break and the water will spill.”
This undated 19th century edition combines both volumes of Spurgeon’s works into one with Vol. 2 having a separate title-page: ‘John Ploughman's pictures; or, More of his plain talk for plain people.’ This edition includes numerous illustrations throughout.
