Turkish warrior with his wife, 1844.

Each signed and dated: E.L. Lamy 1844 and E. Quesnel.
Height approx. 50 cm.
Provenance: Swiss private collection.
Eugène Louis Lami was born in Paris and was a French artist of the 19th century. He studied in the workshops of Antoine-Jean Gros and Horace Vernet who also encouraged him to visit the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Several extensive study trips through Europe inspired him in his artistic work. He found the motifs and subjects for his paintings primarily in the history and current events of the country he was visiting. Above all, his stay in Crimea in 1854, where he witnessed the Crimean War, is mainly reflected in his works.
