Chengrong Jian (簡成榮 1856-1936) was born in a rich family in Da Pai Village, Kan city, Fujian Province, China in the fifth year of Qing Xianfeng. When he was 15 years old in 1870, he went to Lichuan, Jiangxi Province to do business. Because of his cleverness and diligence, he became a big sun-cured tobacco merchant in the Fujian Province and Jiangxi Province in less than ten years. He set up a total of seven large-scale tobacco processing workshops in Lichuan. The maximum numbers of employment of workers was more than 300 people. Therefore, the business profit was extremely abundant. In order to meet the needs of business and the expansion of further wealth, he spent 100,000 silver tael in the twenty-ninth year of Guangxu to donate fourth rank officials for his older brother Chengde Jian and himself. They got a nominal post as chaoyidafu and set up an official residence. Because Chengrong Jian loved antiques, he collected some Chinese ancient porcelain, ancient jade, bronzes and other antiques when he was doing his business. He also met with some wealthy businessmen in Shanghai because of his business. Introducing via a businessman Mr. Chen, Chengrong Jian met Hongzhang Li. Chengrong Jian and Mr. Chen jointly funded the Li Hongzhang Western Affairs Movement. Because of the rich investment from Chengrong Jian, Hongzhang Li appreciated him very much. Hongzhang Li known that Chengrong Jian loved antiques, so he gave him antiques as gifts many times. There were 32 pieces of porcelain, more than 20 pieces of ancient jade, and 5 pieces of bronzes and other antiques. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the youngest son of Chengrong Jian hid the antiques inside the walls of the old house.
