PCGS Estimates that of an original mintage of 286,588 pieces, a mere 700 survive in all grades. Of these 700 Pieces, PCGS has graded 547 as the common variety. They have graded to date 2 coins as the HM-1 Varity. This Variety has as its distinctive feature, the Double 5 on the reverse.
Up for auction is an 1838 Classic Head $5 Gold Piece, HM-1 Variety with the Doubled 5. Additionally the coin at auction has reflective fields and a terrific Proof Like appearance. To date neither NGC or PCGS has ever graded any as PL, but up until very recently, neither service was grading type coins that were PL as PL. Trends for the standard Variety in ms60 are $4500 and in ms63 $10,000.
