Description
Lot of 2. 1) 1854 receipt for GM Davidson to have a bar license for three months. June 1854. "Pine Grove" written in ink at the top. 4.5 x 8.5" Rare location! Pine Grove was located about a mile SW of Howland Flat. In the early 1850s, prospectors came upon a pine tree that had blown over. They panned the dirt exposed by the roots and found gold. 2) Merchandise and Liquor License, 1853, also for GM Davidson. Signed by the treasurer and auditor of Sierra County. 4.25 x 8" Wear to right border. It appears that Yale University has a GM Davidson archive: "George M. Davidson's diary and correspondence describe an 1849 overland trip to California. This material records the hardships of the journey, encounters with Indians, life in the California gold mines, and his establishment of a general store in Pine Grove. There are business records such as store inventories, bills from suppliers, a mining work ledger, bullion receipts, and informal certificates for mining shares in Butte County and Sierra counties, California."
