Description
This lot consists of a large framed acrylic painting on canvas, done in the style of neo-expressionist street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). A towering statement, full of pure color and uninhibited feeling. Standing in front of this primal piece, the viewer quickly becomes absorbed in its sweeping, expressive strokes and bold language. A testament to the vibrancy and talent associated with Jean-Michel Basquiat. A unique highlight to any modern art collection. Overall piece measures approximately 41.5" x 12.25".
Reverse side of painting features several stamps, labels, and inscriptions. Top of frame holds an affixed label from a previous auction, as well as an illegible marker inscription. Right side of frame bears a stamp which reads, "Modern & Contemporary International Fine Art Collection. W. New York." This stamp is repeated on canvas at top center. Bottom edge of frame has an attached paper label with the name and information of the Strong Gallery (Ellsworth, Maine).
Hand-painted inscriptions on reverse side of canvas contain various symbols, including a triple-pointed crown, and the phrases "J.M.B.", "NEW YORK", and "O.G.P. + P.S.L. 15."
Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, December 22, 1960 â?? August 12, 1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s, where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop music culture. By the 1980s, his neo-expressionist paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his art in 1992.
