Notes & Literature Harper's Magazine was calling itself "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" when this first volume was bound, including issues 1:1 (June 1850) though 1:6 (November 1850). The "Advertisement" to the first bound volume said, in part: "The Publishers take great pleasure in presenting herewith the first volume of the NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE. It was projected and commenced in the belief, that it might be made the means of bringing within the reach of the great mass of the American people, an immense amount of useful and entertaining reading matter, to which, on account of the great number and expense of the books and periodicals in which it originally appears, they have hitherto had no access.

Topics are diverse, ranging from serious discussions of the day's issues (e.g., "Education in America") and news, such as elections in the Paris Assembly, a defeated motion in English Parliament to give the Australian colonies the full management of their own affairs, and expeditions to the Arctic Ocean. More entertaining were features such as "Scenery on the Erie Railroad," "Adverture with a Snake," and "Autumn Fashions," with illustations of "morning costume," "evening costume," and "promenade dress." Fiction was frequent, featuring, for example, "A True Ghost Story" and "What Horses Think of Men." Poetry included such fare as "Sonnet on the Death of Wordsworth 23d April, 1850" and "The Railway."
