Description
CrandallÂ’s District School Toy. This is a complete set of the wonderful and very rare CrandallÂ’s District School Toy from 1876. All the figures can be removed from their bases and moved around based on a childÂ’s imagination. The arms of all the figures move freely and the colors and faces are bright and wonderful The box is there along with all of the original accessories that are usually missing including MaryÂ’s little lamb, the dunce hat on the dunce and his stool, all of the books and the words in the books still in excellent shape, and all of the stands. There are a few missing hands and feet on the scholars and they can be seen in pieces 5 , 9 and 10. The face of the little scholar has been glued back on (piece #9) and there is a name of maybe the owner of this toy on the bottom of the same small scholar. The clasp of the box is missing but the box is in good shape other than this missing piece. All the scholars and the school master will fit in the box. There are no replacement pieces and this set is all original right down to the hand drawn faces and hair on all of the characters., Charles Martin Crandall, the inventor of this wonderful toy, moved his factory from Montrose, PA from Covington PA in 1866 and began to make his wooden toys. There is a Crandall’s District School toy in the National Museum of Play, and it can also be seen in the 6 Christmas issue of All-American Life in an article entitled Carving a Place in History by Gregory LeFever. The box is 10” long by 6” tall and the figures range in size from 4” to 8” tall.
