Description
Acrylic Paintings and Silkscreen Prints 1968-1981
From the time I was a boy growing up in the Bronx I saw overwhelming beauty in a city that no one else seemed to notice. It was the old architectural elements particularly in the “edge of the city” outer boroughs like the Bronx, Brooklyn or Queens that held the most interest. The old city was built by craftsmen. From my window, I gazed endlessly at the changing pattern of light and shadow on the intricate metalwork of the Jerome Avenue El. This mighty structure dominated the corner of my block and I can still see the blazing pattern of ties cast on Jerome Avenue below, and the cascade of white sparks from an IRT train passing above in the rain. It was these deeply held early memories that had over time distilled into essential simplicity that formed the basis for the architectural oeuvre. The hard edges created a structural framework on which I could hang the most romantic of memory – always finding these glorified recollections more intense and real than the the moment.
