Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl with a round but stable base, tall walls, and a flared rim surrounding the deep basin. The highly burnished, beige-slipped lower body is divided into four sections via a pair of intersecting lines, and the cream-slipped shoulder features a colorful register of twelve abstract trophy heads. Head-taking was a significant component of Nazca warfare and religious mythology. A warrior could increase his might and status by capturing prisoners for head-taking. Size: 5.2" W x 3.7" H (13.2 cm x 9.4 cm)

Condition
Professionally repaired from multiple large pieces, with restoration along some areas, and resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions to basin and exterior, with light fading to areas of original pigment. Nice traces of original pigmentation across exterior.
