Description
A Carved wooden maskette , likely hung on a shrine. A highly stylized female face embellished with incised geometric designs accented with various colors of kaolin clay pigment. The Ijaw believed in spirits refer to as the "Water People" to whom they paid tribute in their masquerades. A local myth tells how a woman was abducted by water spirits and eventually returned to teach the village the dances and stories she had seen beneath the water. The mask measures 13 x 3.25 inches. A metal display stand can be included for an additional $35.00
