Jack Kerouac's Uneaten Irish Whiskey Fruitcake!

An Irish whiskey-flavored fruit cake, still contained in its unopened vintage tin, belonging to Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous American writer who brought us On The Road (1957). Provenance: The piece will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executer of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.

Gateaux, Ltd. (Dublin, Republic of Ireland) "Molly O'Rourke's Traditional Old Irish Whisked Flavoured Fruit Cake", ca. 1950s-1960s, contained in its unopened tin and still sealed under a bilingual Gaelic/English importation sticker decorated with a shamrock. The fruit cake, made with raisons, almonds, crystallized fruit segments, peel, and extract, once weighed in at 1.75 lbs. The cake is still--incredibly--intact inside (it bumps against the tin interior when gently shaken.) The tin shows scattered masking tape residue, and isolated rust, else very good. Accompanied by a "Miracle Can Opener" and a period Japanese stainless steel teaspoon.

Established in 1949 and bought out in 1970, Gateaux, Ltd. was one of Ireland's largest cake manufacturers. "Molly O'Rourke's" tinned fruitcake was carried by Macy's Department Store and was popular in the United States and Australia.

Perhaps Kerouac, whose penchant for whiskey is well-known, also liked whiskey flavored fruitcake. Whatever the explanation, the indestructible nature of fruitcakes has been confirmed!
