Description
North Carolina Currency
April 2, 1776 Five Dollars "Triton" PCGS EF-40
North Carolina. April 2, 1776. Five Dollars. "Triton" vignette. PCGS graded Extremely Fine-40.
Fr. NC-162b. The handsome 1776 Revolutionary War period "Triton" vignette represents a son of Poseidon and Amphitrite who has the head and trunk of a man and the tail of a fish. Triton is often represented with a conch-shell trumpet, however in this case it is a three-pronged spear. This is the clearest and sharpest vignette of Triton on any of the dozen or so examples we have handled. Once again, the engraver's initials appear on a note within this issue, in this case hidden at the lower left corner. PCGS notes edge tears and repairs, upper left corner repaired and redrawn, minor mounting remnants on back, none being serious. This note is a very attractive, sharply detailed superior quality example of the popular major type.
