Item Details
Description
Title: Cathedrale Naturelle. (Suffolk, England.)
Gerald K. Geerlings (1897-1998)
Drypoint, 1929.
Edition 37.
Signed and titled in pencil.
Image size 5 3/8 x 9 7/8" (13.5 x 25 cm).
#10 in "Gerald K. Geerlings" by Joseph Czestochowski.
Gerald Geerlings was an American artist born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He worked as an architectural draftsman before World War I. His work with howitzers during the war damaged his hearing, but not his gusto. After the war, he returned to the US to study architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and went on to work for an architectural firm in New York, where he met Louis Rosenberg.
Geerlings once again found himself involved in warfare when World War II rolled around. His artistic talents meant he spent the war drawing maps and detailed aerial view for the troops. He also was part of the Daylight Precision Bombing with the Air Force, developing targeting identification.
His love for architecture can be seen in his etchings and lithographs.
