[6], [17]-140, [4], [141]-204 pp. With 88 lithographed plates of views, 8 of them double-page; hand-colored lithographed maps of California and of San Diego/San Bernardino Counties; plan of Etiwanda. (Folio) 34.5x27.5 cm (13¾x10¾") original quarter leather & cloth, gilt lettering on front cover and spine.
Rare, extensively illustrated history of San Bernardino County, with the final 68 or so pages devoted to San Diego County. There is a parallel version of the work, with the first 140 pages being a history of San Diego County, and the remaining 68 pages covering San Bernardino County. The present version seems to be scarcer. Significant for the historical text, but especially important for the marvelous array of lithographed views of the residences of the leading citizens; renderings of hotels, stables, breweries, newspaper offices, and other businesses; portraits of influential citizens; ranches, farms, orchards, apiaries, etc. Includes a striking bird's-eye view of the Redlands colony.
