A life long resident, Edwards attended Austin High School and graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1964. He studied under Robert Massey for 20 years. His first one man show was at the old Bar Sevilla in 1965. Edwards taught at Jefferson High School from 1964-1966, at which time he became an art consultant for Prentice Hall Publishing Company. In 1969 he returned to teaching art at Gadsden High School and retired in 1992 to devote his time to art. Steve Edwards is one of the few artists in El Paso to do his own plate making, inking and pressing. He engraves directly onto aluminum plates, using the dry point method to create original images. He mixes his own printing ink and with the help of a studio assistant, prints on 100% rag paper with a hand operated etching press that bears the date 1865. After approximately two weeks, during which the wetted paper are left to dry, the artist colors the work by hand using acrylics. Edwards is also known as ‘Estéban’, the name he uses for his creation of retablo style ‘santos’. Edwards has participated in many arts and crafts fairs throughout Texas and New Mexico and held membership in many Art Associations.
