A rare pre-Civil War printing of Claiborne’s “Life and Correspondence of John A. Quitman.” This book is a telling of the life and career of John Quitman, the tenth and sixteenth governor of Mississippi and General in the Mexican War. He was strongly pro-slavery and eventually became one of the largest landowners in Mississippi. Quitman’s biographer, John F. H. Claiborne, wrote that “A more ambitious man never lived. ... He was greedy for military fame.”
This second volume to the 1860 first edition of Claiborne’s biography was compiled from original documents and letters and includes various battles, Quitman’s plan for the occupation of Mexico, his resignation from Governor, his view for the increase of the slave trade, his failing health, and much more. This 1860 edition is complete with a double page map from Quitman’s Report!
