This lot consists of an ink illustration on paper, done in the Surrealist style of Max Ernst (German, 1891-1976). A handwritten inscription at lower right reads, "Max Ernst". This incredibly detailed image depicts the ghostly outline of a male figure at center, surrounded by a spindly circle of women. The central figure seems to link them all. This atmospheric piece would make a strong addition to any collection of modern art. Unframed piece measures approximately 13.75" x 10".

Max Ernst (German, 1891-1976) was a paintor, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. He was a leading member of the Dada and the Surrealist art movements of the early 20th century. Ernst was famously wed to Peggy Guggenheim for a brief period in the early 1940s. Ernst's colleagues and co-conspirators were some of the other great and defining artists of the day -- from Man Ray to Marcel Duchamp and Marc Chagall.
