Description
This lot consists of graphite and pastel illustration on paper, done in the soft, tasteful style of Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917). "Degas" is written in pastel at lower left corner. Image depicts an illuminated ballet dancer with lily-white, almost translucent skin. She appears to be seated during a rehearsal; a momentary break to catch her breath. This Impressionist piece would be a fine highlight to any collector's gallery. Overall unframed dimensions measure approximately 11.5" x 8.25".
Reverse side of piece features a stamp which reads, "Atelier Ed. Degas".
Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially associated with the subject of the theatre; more than half of his works depict ballet dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, Degas rejected the term, preferring to be called a Realist. He was a superb draftsman and particularly masterly in depicting movement, which can clearly be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects, and anatomical studies. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
