Alfred Charles Stanley Anderson (England, 1884 - 1966)
Alfred Charles Stanley Anderson ('Stanley Anderson') was an important early twentieth century British etcher and engraver. He was the son of a working engraver who set him to a seven year apprenticeship. In 1909 he was awarded a modest scholarship and studied under Frank Short at the Royal College of Art, London.
Equally well respected for both his figure studies and architectural views, Stanley Anderson produced his first etching in 1908. During the following twenty years 160 of his etchings and drypoints were published, as well as a number of fine line engravings. Today, extensive collections of the graphic art of Stanley Anderson are housed at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and at the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Stanley Anderson was a full member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers.
His print Venus and Adonis ranks among Anderson's finest works of etched art. In 1929 James Laver wrote: "Another etcher who is more interested in the people that move about among great buildings, than in the buildings themselves, is Stanley Anderson. His treatment of architecture is capable and conscientious, but he seems most at home when he is depicting street types with a touch of kindly satire, as in Venus and Adonis, or with a sense of the perpetual tragedy of the very poor as in The Arches. I would suggest that the figures in "Venus and Adonis" envelope both "kindly satire" and the "perpetual tragedy" of the homeless."
