Description
1610 1ed Gunpowder Treason Lancelot Andrewes Bible Sermon Christian IV Denmark
Lancelot Andrewes was a 16th-century English bishop under the Church of England who is best remembered for overseeing the initial translation of the King James version of the Bible. His sermons in 1606 were some of the most polarizing and important sermons preached in all of England during that time. He was asked to prepare sermons after the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot to be presented to the king himself.
This sermon, ‘Concio Latine Habita Coram Regia’, was given in August in 1606 in front of Christian IV of Denmark on his visit through England. It was within this and other sermons that Andrewes justified the importance of celebrating the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot. First edition published in 1610.
