Item Details
Description
Southern school portrait, oil on canvas, of William Hardie Timmons of Madison County, AL (1839-1906). Unsigned, but bears similarities to the work of Joseph Thoits Moore, who along with William Frye and Nicola Marschall was one of the predominant Alabama portrait painters of the day. Timmons, a member of a prominent early Alabama family, lived at Timmons Plantation outside Huntsville. He is depicted in this painting as a young man, seated in a chair, wearing a black suit and large blue bow tie. Molded giltwood and composition frame, probably original. Condition: overall craquelure, creasing and minor flaking. Scattered losses to frame. Sight: 27-3/4" W x 34-1/2" H (oval), framed: 40" W x 46" H. American, circa 1860. Provenance: Knoxville, TN Collection; descended in the sitter's family.
