Armstead Long’s ‘Memoirs of Robert E Lee’ is a late 19th-century account of the life and military career of the famed Confederate General. It is one of the most thorough portrayals of his life and features details on important Civil War battles such as Gettysburg. This book includes battle maps and correspondence with Abraham Lincoln. However Long makes many false statements and claims regarding Lee and his commands. (Eicher)

According to Eicher,

“Written by the staff officer Armistead Lindsay Long, buttressed with substantial official documents. The outlook toward Lee is deeply anchored in the Virginia-centric view of Lee as infallible hero.

Nevins notes that this work features a
