Description
A hand painted masonite sign in original paint, marked "BLUE JAY / ORCHARDS / ROBERT JOSEPHY", circa 1934-1950. Paint with crazing and separation, and while the sign is all original, it is in fair condition due to the paint problem. 20 1/2" x 23 1/2". Notes from the Hartford Courant: Blue Jay Orchards was located in Bethel Connecticut and Mr. Josephy, a prominent advocate for land conservation and a pioneering book designer, was it's owner. "In 1934, with little farming experience, Mr. Josephy purchased 50 acres in Bethel and called it Blue Jay Orchards, which he expanded to 140 acres. He sold the farm and retired in 1985.".
