Grant Ulysses

U.S. Grant Small Archive Featuring Ca. 1872 Ferrotype Portrait Campaign Stickpin!

A small archive relating to 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), including an unusual presidential campaign stickpin; embroidered presidential campaign ribbon; memorial service program; and piano sheet music for "General Grant's Grand March". Expected wear throughout but in generally very good to near fine condition.

U.S. Grant was one of the Civil War's most feted generals. He distinguished himself at Vicksburg, and personally received General Robert E. Lee's surrender in mid-April 1865. A Republican stalwart, Grant implemented many of the party's Reconstruction policies during his two terms as president (1869-1877). Grant was only able to appreciate retirement for a few years, dying of throat cancer in July 1885. Grant’s death, as well as his memoirs, shined a light on his personal character, military career, and presidential accomplishments; this ephemera testifies to his incredible popularity.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A diminutive stickpin with a ferrotype portrait of U.S. Grant at the center of a decorative brass-toned round frame, measuring .75" diameter and .875" long including the pin. The style suggests this pin dates from Grant's reelection campaign, ca. 1872.

2. A gorgeous campaign ribbon produced by "T. Stevens / Coventry." White silk embroidered in black, white, blue, red, green, and pink. "Richmond / 1865" appears at top, and "Lieutenant / General / U.S. Grant" appears at bottom, with Grant's portrait in a flowering wreath at center. Minor damage to top with attempted repair; the bottom is forked. Else near fine. 8.75" long. The style suggests the ribbon dates from Grant's first presidential campaign, ca. 1865.

3. A program for the "Memorial Services in Honor of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Buffalo, N.Y. Saturday, August 8, 1885, During the Time the Funeral Ceremonies and Interment are Taking Place at Riverside Park, New York City." Uneven toning and mounting traces recto.

4. Lee & Walker (Philadelphia) piano sheet music for "General Grant's Grand March", with music by E. Mack. A handsome print of Grant in full military uniform graces the cover. Piano fingerings marked in pencil. Scattered closed tears and stains.
