U.S. Grant Rare Mexican Railroad Letter

1p letter signed by former 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) as "U.S. Grant". New York, October 8, 1883. Addressed to Honorable Hugh J. Jewett, President of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad Company. Stamped at upper left. Expected folds and mounting traces at top verso, else very good. 4to. Accompanied by an early-twentieth-century Gravure Company of America portrait of Grant standing in military uniform, and a print of Grant's home in Galena, Illinois.

Grant notifies Jewett that he has received his letter enclosing the pass over the railroad. In April 1881, Grant had become President of Jay Gould's Mexican Southern Railroad Company. Grant sincerely believed that building railways linking Mexico with the United States would prove mutually beneficial to both North American economies.

Grant's correspondent Jewett was a fellow railroad director. Jewett was director or president, in succession, of: the Central Ohio Railroad Company; the Little Miami and Columbus & Xenia Railroads; the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati & St. Louis Railway; the Cincinnati & Muskingum Valley Railroad; and the Erie Railway Company (later reorganized into the New York, Lake Erie & Western Railroad Company). Jewett was considered as a Democratic presidential candidate for the election of 1880.
