Kerouac Jack
Jack Kerouac's Heavily Worn Shoes Hit the Road, from his Estate
A pair of shoes personally owned and worn by Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous American writer who brought us On The Road (1957). Provenance: The piece will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executor of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.
Kerouac was nearly 5'9" and had a stocky, athletic build. He had rather large feet for his height; on average, Kerouac's shoes correspond to a size 11 - 11 1/2. Kerouac's footwear shows considerable wear and heavy use. What bars, alleyways, parks, and docksides did they tread? Did they pace the length of his St. Petersburg, Florida house, between the kitchen and the bedroom and the porch for a smoke, all while working out the plot of his latest novel?
The lot includes a pair of Jiffies medium-sized green velvet slip-on soft shoes. Expected wear including partly cracked soles, else very good. Approximately 11" in length.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
