Ringmaster Clown and Cycling Cat Automaton, c. 1900
Possibly Renou. Clown with white bisque head incised (indistinctly) "F.G." in cartouche for Frères Gaultier. Closed mouth, dramatic makeup, papier-mâché body with wood hands holding a baton, original (worn) lace-edged bi-color satin costume and conical hat, balancing with one foot on a spindle attached to a wire which in turns supports a flock-covered papier-mâché cat on a monocycle, on circular paper-covered card base containing open-spring motor that causes the clown to turn in a circle as the cat rides around and around and up and down, total ht. 13 in. (33 cm), working condition. Cat missing one eye, clown somewhat unstable. A charming and unusual mechanical toy.

Möglicherweise von Renou. Weißclown mit Kopf aus Biskuitporzellan, undeutlich bezeichnet mit "F.G." in Kartusche für Frères Gaultier. Geschlossener Mund, dramatische Zirkus-Schminke, Pappmaché-Körper und Holzhände, mit einem Dressurstab, zweifarbiges, etwas abgenutztes Original-Satinkostüm mit Spitzenbesatz, Spitzhut, auf einem Fuß balancierend, runder mit Papier bezogener Sockel, eine an einer Stange befestigte Katze aus beflocktem Papiermaché auf einem Einrad, Federwerkmotor im Sockel. Der Clown dreht sich mit der Katze im Kreis, wobei diese sich auf und ab bewegt. Höhe 33 cm, funktioniert. Der Katze fehlt ein Auge, Clown etwas wackelig. Ein charmantes und ungewöhnliches mechanisches Spielzeug. - Provenienz: Sammlung von José Mario Armero.
