Item Details
Description
J.M. Basquiat, SAMO under the Crown, street art on real embossed STOP traffic sign, signed lower right, dimensions L 18 x H 18 inches, weight approx. 5 lbs. Condition: signs of wear and age, multiple scratches, bend, missing paint and rusty. Sale it as it is, finale sale. Provenance: Privat collection, USA, as all our consignments for this auction, brings up for sale dozens of Urban Art collected over years! Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 - 1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s, where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop music culture. By the 1980s, his neo-expressionist paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally.
