Description
Costa Rican Jade Axe God Pendant (100-500 AD)
The long history of Jade carving in Costa Rica is seen in this in their detailed Axe God Pendants. For over 1400 years, beginning in 500 BC, the people of Costa Rica carved elaborate figures into Jade. The Jade pendants are found in four distinct forms, whole celt, half celt, quarter celt, and a general category of other forms.
This Whole Celt depicts a bat figure, with the tongue extended. An anthropomorphic set of arms, and a large decorated headdress may imply a shaman transforming into the animal. The figure is placed above a beautiful, broad blade.
