Colonial New York Governor Rip Van Dam Related Document
(RIP VAN DAM) (c. 1660-1749). Acting Governor of the Province of New York from 1731 to 1732. As one of the leaders of the republican liberal party, Van Dam confronted the subsequent royal governor William Cosby.
c. 1700 to 1720, Manuscript Legal Document written in brown ink on handmade laid period paper, not signed, no date, noted as "City of New York," 1 page, measuring 12.25" x 8," Very Fine. This early New York City document details a complaint between Van Dam and a Peter White, and reads in part: "Rip Van Dam ... complains of Peter White late of the City of New York ... Where the said Peter ... was indebted unto the said Rip [Van Dam] in two pounds fifteen shillings and three pence lawful money of New York for divers good wares & merchandise ...". Based on the content, apparently White was to assume the debt and pay Van Dam, but refused, and so Van Dam brought a suit for five pounds. This Document is lightly toned with normal folds with some expertly sealed splits. Aside from some minor edge wear, this early Colonial document remains in nice readable condition.
