An Egyptian Bead Net for a Mummy (Partial)

Item Details

Description

Egypt, Late Period, ca 664 -332 BC. Comprising of tiny, fine ring beads in a rich, well-controlled palette of colors, alternating turquoise blue, white, deep sky blue, black, tree green, and golden yellow, the pattern woven In three registers, the lowest register depicts four djed pillars, or pillars of stability, symbols of Osiris, the great god of the dead. The top and middle registers are decorative diagonal motifs that together form a multicolored adornment incorporating images intended to protect the deceased. This sample would have come from a bead net that covered the full length of the mummy and being of such high quality, would have functioned as an enormous amulet.

The Egyptians of the Dynastic Period had always been fond of jewelry in faience, a quartz-based ceramic with brilliant colors, but it was not until the 1st millennium BC that jewelry was applied over the last shroud, protecting the mummy with symbols of the great gods of the hereafter and creating a marvelous effect.
