Description
Manner of R.J. Horner (American, founded 1886), late 19th century. A magnificently carved armchair with a horned figure (possibly Neptune) to the top crest rail, flanked by two highly figured gargoyles stiles resting on scrolled acanthus leaf arms, animal form legs with caster paw feet. Apparently unmarked. Approx: h. 47", h. 18" (seat), w. 27", d. 31". Note: S. Karpen & Bros. (American, 1880-1951) also worked in this style.
Condition
Structurally sound. Few scattered repairs to top figural crest. Edgewear to gargoyle figures with small losses to hair, wings, and ears. Loss to decorative carving near left gargoyle---has been smoothed and re-finished. Scattered abrasions and wear to knees, feet, and seat rail. Four present cracks to seat back--stable. Scattered scratches to vulnerable finish. Two stains and wear to upholstery. All wear commensurate with age and usage.
