Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. late 3rd to 4th century CE. A cast-bronze plumb bob with a compressed spherical body with a pair of holes bored lengthwise through the body. The top of the plumb bob features a squat neck with an integral suspension ring, and the base tapers into a thick, cylindrical point. Plumb bobs like this example were suspended from tall heights to ensure that a structure would be perfectly level once complete. Complete with a modern necklace strand, this is a wearable necklace that represents the architectural ingenuity of the Romans! Wearable as shown. Bronze plumb bob is ancient, and necklace strand is modern. Top ring repaired from roughly three pieces, with some in-fill material in small areas, and resurfacing with light adhesive residue along break lines. Abrasions to body, perforated holes, lower point, and ring handle, with light encrustations. Nice patina throughout.
