Description

A “V-J DAY” COMMEMORATIVE POSTAL COVER SIGNED BY DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
A scarce postal cover commemorating the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on what came to be known as “V-J Day” September 2 1945. The cover has been signed by General DOUGLAS MACARTHUR (1880-1964) who at the outbreak of the war escaped Corregidor in Manila Harbor vowing to return to liberate the Philippines. After a vicious campaign to liberate New Guinea he landed in the Philippines to declare: “I have returned!” The cover is also signed by Major General CHARLES A. WILLOUGHBY (1892-1972) who served as MacArthur's chief of intelligence during most of World War II and the Korean War. He voided war crimes charges against Shiro Ishii in exchange for information gathered by Unit 731 a covert biological and chemical warfare research of the Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experimentation in China.
