Description
Jackie Kennedy ALS Mentioning Ties, Along with 3 of Oleg Cassini's Neckties

A small lot related to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy (1929-1994) and her favorite fashion designer, Oleg Cassini (1913-2006). The lot consists of a 1p autograph letter signed by Jackie and addressed to Oleg mentioning ties, and three of Oleg's designed and personally owned neckties. Since the theme of the lot is neckties, we thought it would tie together well to match the letter with the ties! Provenance: From the personal property of the Estate of Oleg Cassini.

The lot is comprised of:

1. 1p autograph letter signed by Jackie Kennedy as "Jackie" at lower right. Written in October 1972 in New York City. On a classic example of Jackie's signature pale blue stationery with her Manhattan address "1040 Fifth Avenue" embossed in white at top. The undated letter is accompanied by the original transmittal envelope further endorsed by Jackie as "Mr Oleg Cassini". A few chipped edges at top. Expected paper folds. 5.25" x 7.5". The envelope is neatly letter-opened at top.

Jackie wrote in part: "Ari and I will look so dashing in my beautiful T-shirt and his magnificent ties - That was really sweet of you - ".

The letter poses an interesting question: did Jackie Kennedy, universally acknowledged as one of the most influential female fashion icons of the twentieth century, ever wear tee-shirts? Evidently yes.

2. Three men's neckties designed and worn by Oleg Cassini. All three examples are from the Oleg Cassini "Burma" Collection and have brand labels discretely located verso. The green and yellow paisley tie is 100% silk, while the powder blue and lavender ties were hand-made. Near fine. Average size approximately 27" long.

The lot illustrates how Jackie Kennedy and Oleg Cassini shared their mutual interest in clothes well after Jackie had left the White House. After his tenure as Jackie's fashion designer between 1961-1963, Cassini continued designing for Broadway, television, and film, later establishing his own boutique and professional brand.

Cassini designed 300 outfits for Jackie while he served as her exclusive fashion designer-- or "Secretary of Style". Cassini had a concrete vision of what Jackie's clothing would look like, and more importantly, what it would represent. Her evening gowns, day wear, suits, coats, hats, and accessories would create a distinctive "Jackie look" that would mark the reign of the new "American Queen."
