Description
Fine example of an early Taghkanic (also spelled Taconic) splint basket with a swing handle.
The taghkanic baskets were made by a reclusive grouping of families that lived in the hills of Columbia County, NY. The characteristics that identify these baskets, all of which are present on this example, are a flattened rim with double wrapping, carved wooden loops that hold the handle, a solit wood handle with holes drilled for the hoops to attach, and a kick-up bottom. Another identifying characteristic is the fine quality of the work.
Excellent condition with a nice early patina. Circa late 19th to early 20th Century.
Measures about 11 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 11" tall to the top of the handle.
