Item Details
Description
-NO RESERVE-A long barrel French flintock holster pistol dating about 1790-1815. Barrel length 11.5 inches. Bore roughly .52 caliber. The wood has nice edges and sharp checkering on the grip. The hammer is a goose-neck style without reinforcing. The lock is signed in script -Paris-. The angle of the butt, checkering, base-ring and convex butt cap are classic French features.

The barrel transitions from octagon to round at a baluster ring about midway down. A sighting groove starts on the breech plug tang, extends about halfway to the baluster ring and is then picked up again as raised rib leading to a front sight. The barrel retains faint portions of its brown finish and striations at the breech suggest it had a faux-damascus finish for its entire length. The mounts are iron. The lock scews are secured with separate engraved escutcheons on the reverse, the rearmost in the form of inverted flaring wings. The triggerguard finial mirrors the shape in its pointed-tree extension. The brass-tipped ramrod is secured by a thimble and rear entry-pipe with turned rings. The forestock has incised border lines from the muzzle to the lock platform and counterpane. The forestock is more square in cross-section forward of the swell and rececessed at the muzzle for ramrod head. This is a nice example of a mounted officer's pistol, privately purchased as they all were, that would be carried in saddle holsters.

Overall V G condition. 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. It is definitely in its original flintlock configuration and NOT a reconversion.
